Our journey began in June 2011 when a group of 3 Haitians, 4 Haitian-Americans and 4 Americans traveled to the southern part of Haiti to build a water well as part of a service project for the town of Cavaillon.
In June 2012, we returned to fund a clinic day conducting physical examinations for the rural peasants, many of them have never seen a doctor before.
In 2013, instead of visiting, we opted to support the clinic by donating the funds that would have been spent on travel to instead buy and ship medical supplies to the town, care of City Hall. This varied approach from year to year allows both for a personal connection and much needed monetary support.
In 2014, we sponsored a dry latrine building project with the local church.
In June of 2015, we conducted an in-person service again. This time, through various networks, we recruited Haitian doctors in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, to travel to the southern countryside to volunteer for an in-country day of service. 27 nurses and volunteers from the United Stated traveled to Haiti to support the Haitian doctors, and also brought all the needed medical supplies and medicine. We believe this approach not only helps the poor peasants in the very far countryside of Cavaillon who need the most help, but also supports the professionals who live and work in Port-au-Prince, Haiti who desire to provide community service but lack appropriate resources. This reinforces our goal of strengthening civil society in Haiti.
In December of 2016, after Hurricane Matthew devastated the region, the volunteers sponsored a clothes and material drive to help people rebuilt.
In December of 2017, we returned to organize a service trip of holiday gift-distribution and dinner celebration for over 600 families. Upon returning, we decided to begin publishing our stories by creating this website and incorporated as Friends of Southern Haiti, Inc. in the state of Georgia.
We returned again in December 2018.
